How Can I Keep My Home Looking Fresh and New?

July 1, 2021

No matter the age of your home, you can keep it looking fresh and new. Doing so improves your curb appeal and it can influence how you feel about your house as well. There are some options that will be more expensive and time intensive, but there are some that will be simple fixes.

Replace Your Siding

Over time, your siding will sustain some wear and tear. While you might experience some minor changes, there are signs that it is time to change out your siding. One clear sign is if you see any rot or mold in your siding. This is most common with wood siding. You should also consider replacing your siding if you have any serious cracks, dents, or missing pieces. When you replace your siding, you want to consider the most durable options. Many homes feature vinyl siding because it is long lasting, requires little maintenance, and it is cheaper than many other options. Replacing your siding overall improves the look of your home and makes it look new again.

Repaint Your Door

If you want to make a simple upgrade, you can repaint your front door. This new coat of paint will help to freshen up your entryway and it can create the first impression for your home. When you choose the color of your front door, you should consider the look of the rest of your house as well as the statement you want to make. It helps to stick with more neutral colors such as black or gray. Another popular color is a red door. Red makes a very bold statement but can be a major commitment for some. A burgundy door can give you the same impact of a red door without committing to a bright or bold color. Other popular door colors include various greens and blues.

Care for Your Garden

Nothing makes a house look old like an overgrown garden or an unkempt lawn. To renew your home, you should take care of your garden and landscaping. You can start off by simply keeping your lawn mowed and well cared for. This includes raking leaves in the fall and clearing away any other debris. If you have flower beds, you should weed often and remove any dead plant parts. Using mulch improves the appearance and can bring added benefits to the health of your plants. Mulch helps retain water in your flower beds so you don’t need to water as much and it can prevent weeds from sprouting around your other plants. If the current maintenance is too much to handle, it might be helpful to simplify your landscape design. If you make it something you can manage, it will be easier to make it look nice.

Replace Your Windows

While it is expensive, replacing your windows is worth it. If your windows are dirty, foggy, cracked, etc. it can really age your home. New windows look fresh and brighten up your home. In addition to making the outside look newer, replacing your windows can have many other benefits. New windows can help prevent leaks in your home. This includes water leaking into your home as well as heat leaking out. Your new windows will be better insulated which protects your home and can save you money on your energy bill. Some new windows also come with blinds in between the window panes instead of external blinds. This can reduce dust and allergens within your home. To top it all off, newer windows will be far less maintenance than your old ones.

Refresh Your Fence

If you have a fence around your yard, you should take some time to maintain it. In some cases, it may be best to fully replace your fence. However, there is a lot you can do to refresh your fence. To start off, you can clean your fence. One of the best ways to do this is with a pressure washer. On your pressure washer, you can use detergent to clean off your fence. You can use a scrub brush to clean tough spots on your fence. After the detergent has sat for 5-10 minutes, you can then rinse it off with your pressure washer. Once your fence is all clean, you can stain it a new color to further freshen it up.

Update Light Fixtures

The front of your home features many light fixtures. Styles can change drastically over time. If you have never changed out your light fixtures, it can severely date your home. When picking out new fixtures, you should make yourself aware of popular styles. Of course, you want to find something that matches the style of your home while still elevating it. New lights can literally brighten up the front of your home. In addition to a new porch light and other exterior lights, you can add additional lighting. This can include spotlights on your trees and bushes as well as standing lights around your garden. More light around your home can also increase your security.

Upgrade and Maintain Accessories

After you’ve put in the effort to update the outside of your house, you want to finish it off with some final touches. Upgrading the accessories of your home is the way to do this. These accessories include your house numbers, mailbox, and any other fixtures you may have. You can also make additions. For example, you can consider adding some window boxes on your front window to add some pops of color. In addition to upgrades, you should also follow regular maintenance. This is especially true when caring for your gutters. Clogged gutters can lead to flooding around your foundation as well as water stains on your siding. Keeping them clean benefits many areas of your home.

There is a lot you can do to care for your home. You can update and refresh it in order to make it look brand new again. This is helpful if you plan to sell it or if you simply want to improve your curb appeal.
